Episode Two – Only 4 Minutes! Get a Quick Understanding of the Contest Themes
In Episode 2, the 4 themes hand‑picked for this contest are introduced using literary as well as pop culture references as examples to help illustrate the kind of stories that are trending.
Theme One ‑ Girl Power
Female‑centric stories are rising all over the world. We have the “Kickass Heroine” fiction where we follow the journey of a female protagonist from humble beginnings all the way to the height of her dominance, taking names along the way.
“Chasing her Apollo” is when traditional gender roles are reversed, and the female character becomes the aggressor, the instigator, dictating terms, in control.
The “Heroine Rebirth” trope often depicts the female protagonist going through a major transformation, such as the classic body‑swap, or some sort of time‑travel plot‑line.
Theme Two ‑ Fall for a Billionaire
For this theme, Money is the root of all that’s good and evil, and our characters often have to choose between wealth and freedom; between love and a luxurious lifestyle:
The “Billionaire Romantic‑Suspense/Thriller” often puts the billionaire protagonist and his empire or estate in some kind of mysterious turmoil. The love interest enters the picture and either makes things better or much much worse, often time both.
On the other hand, the “ Redeem Ex’s Love” arch plays on plot devices such as one‑night‑stands leading to pregnancy, contract marriage, and other roads to love transcending wealth.
Theme Three ‑ Dare to be a Teen
For Young Adult fiction, YA, in short, we write for and about characters that are in their adolescence, nearing adulthood.
Dealing with issues like puberty, teen angst, peer pressure, bullying, parental pressure, and expectations, etc. This is a very diverse topic and you can often draw on personal experiences to make it your own.
In this topic, we can add some elements like fantasy and the supernatural to discover new possibilities for young adult.
“Meet My Hybrid Girl” is a kind of fantasy story about the special blood power that brings the hybrid girls incredible adventures.
The story that occurs at the “Elite Academy” often tells how a unique girl stands out, attracts everyone’s attention, and gets through the dark times.
Theme Four ‑ LGBT+
Last but not least we have an even more diverse topic aiming to foster creative works of fiction with an accurate representation of the plight of the LGBT plus community.
Love is love, and we encourage our writers to explore the possibilities in developing LGBT+ protagonists in all their glory promoting inclusiveness without pandering.
What will our LGBT+ hero or heroine do “After Breaking up with the Ex” is one of the plot‑line we can develop. Will they reunite or go their separate ways? Will they stay loyal or let loose completely?
“Taming a Playboy” is easier said than done. This kind of story can be a test for writers to find the weaknesses of our protagonists creating an opening for them to be tamed
So you’ve got a “Secret Lover“. Now what? Is it a secret? Is it safe? My, precious. How long can you keep it hidden? Or is all hell going to break loose eventually?
Now that you have a brief understanding of the 4 main topics, we’ll start breaking them down one by one in the coming episodes. But if you can’t wait to get started on your new story, feel free to go right ahead and run your imagination in this lucrative Stary Writing Academy III.
